At least 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
