RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
