Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
