Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
